Callow sandstone building stone features a range of natural colours from warm reds to auburns, with occasional blue-grey veining. It is quarried from our own Callow Quarry on the Herefordshire and Monmouthshire border. Cropped to fixed heights for easier construction, it is then pitched by hand to recreate a traditionally textured coursed building stone.
Coursed stone is cropped to uniform sizes, making it quicker and easier to build. It is available in the pitched faced finish shown in the photos here, with a prominent texture created by hand for a traditional finish. For a softer look, our Callow red sandstone coursed building stone also comes in a tumbled finish.
Coursed pitched face building stone combines the contemporary with the traditional. It makes it a good choice for an extension or outbuildings where the new building needs to complement the historic stonework of the original structure.
Callow red sandstone is also available as a traditional random building and walling stone, in either cropped or tumbled finishes. Our vintage building stone combines coursed and random stone to offer an attractive traditional building stone to suit a lower budget, and also offers a tumbled alternative.
In Monmouthshire, our Callow Red sandstone is highly favoured for vernacular architecture where it helps to maintain the cultural integrity of local buildings. With a choice of random or coursed building stone with pitched face or tumbled finishes, it has a multitude of applications. Callow Red building stone is also very popular in Cheshire, Somerset and Dorset because of its close visual match to traditional Cheshire Red sandstone.
What is coursed building stone?
Coursed building stone is a uniform stone that has set heights and random lengths; it is easy to lay and has minimal wastage.
Our standard coursed building stone is supplied at 140mm with random lengths, and a bed width of 100mm (4 inch). ‘Bed width’ is the width of your footing.
For specific heights please ring to discuss further.
Building and walling materials to match
The sandstone from our Callow quarry can be cut to produce lintels, cills, wall coping and pier caps from the same stone, to your specified sizes.
Callow red brown sandstone can also be used for patios, seating areas, pathways and steps, softening the boundaries between house and garden. Callow Cobblestones create an eye-catching design feature for your driveway or garden.
Many of our own products can be successfully combined with complementary ranges – for example, using lighter coloured stone for cills and coping stones. If you would like advice, examples or ideas about combining stone ranges, do give us a call – or even better, pop in to our showroom.
For natural landscaping we provide boulders and rockery stones from all our UK quarries. Our Callow quarry produces a range of rocks, from small rockery stones to 12 tonne boulders.

An important note about natural stone
Whilst we have done our utmost to ensure the stone and colours displayed on our website are accurate, they are to be used as a guide only. Because stone is a natural product, texture and colour will vary from piece to piece. As we work through the quarry, seams will yield slightly different coloured and shaped stones.
The building technique, quantity, colour and type of mortar used will all impact on the the look of the finished product. Please bear this in mind when ordering stone products. For larger projects or any projects where a specific look is required, we recommend that test panels are built.
