Callow Sandstone – Rubble Walling Stone

Rubble walling is predominately irregular shaped stone with random heights and random lengths with one usable cropped or natural face, with a bed width between 75mm – 200 mm and will require a skilled stonemason to build this stone. One bulk bag covers between 2-4m2.

In Monmouthshire, our Callow red sandstone is highly favoured for vernacular architecture where it helps to maintain the cultural integrity of local buildings. As a cropped building stone it is also very popular in Cheshire, Somerset and Dorset because of its close visual match to traditional Cheshire Red sandstone.

What is Rubble building stone?

Rubble walling is predominately irregular shaped stone with random heights and random lengths with one usable cropped or natural face, with a bed width between 75-200mm and will require a skilled stonemason to build this stone.

The natural variation in the shape and colour of real stone means that every piece of sandstone is unique. As such, working with random building stone requires the skills of a trained stone mason or appropriately experienced builder. It’s a technique that’s suitable for house construction and commercial / public buildings, restoration and renovation projects.

Building and walling materials to match

As well as our random cropped building stone, Callow red sandstone comes in other finishes and formats, including random tumbled building stone for a more antique, weathered appearance. Callow red sandstone is also available as coursed building and walling stone with pitched face or tumbled finishes. Our vintage building stone combines coursed and random stone to offer an attractive traditional building stone to suit a lower budget, and also offers a tumbled alternative.

The sandstone from our Callow quarry can be cut to produce lintels, cills, wall coping and pier caps from the same stone, to your specified sizes.

Many of our own products can be successfully combined with complementary ranges – for example, using lighter coloured stone for cills and coping stones.

For natural landscaping we provide boulders and rockery stones from all our UK quarries.  Our Callow quarry produces a range of boulders, from small rockery stones to 12 tonne boulders.

Different uses for random building stone in the house and garden

Here are a few applications for random building and walling stone:

  • Building restoration and renovation
  • Facing stone for new builds
  • Garden walls
  • Retaining walls
An important note about natural stone

Whilst we have done our utmost to ensure the stone and colours displayed on our website are accurate, they are to be used as a guide only. Because stone is a natural product, texture and colour will vary from piece to piece. As we work through the quarry, seams will yield slightly different coloured and shaped stones.

The building technique, quantity, colour and type of mortar used will all impact on the the look of the finished product. Please bear this in mind when ordering stone products. For larger projects or any projects where a specific look is required, we recommend that test panels are built.
