Rubble Facing Stone – Ragstone

Our Ragstone rubble facing stone is quarried in Dorset. Historically it is found in buildings and walling throughout the South West and particularly South Gloucestershire. It has a raw, naturalistic look that works equally well in traditional and contemporary buildings.

Dorset Ragstone has a neutral brown/grey colouring and is naturally studded with an array of fossilised shells. The fossils give this stone immense character and charm. It crops to various shapes, sizes and bed widths (hence the term ‘rubble stone’), making it an excellent match for traditional buildings.

Rubble stone requires less hand-finishing than Random, Coursed or Tumbled stone, and as such is a more economical option.

We transport the Ragstone from the quarry in Dorset back to our yard, where our in-house skilled stonemasons crop it for rubble facing stone and cladding slips.

Due to the variability in the size and shape of the pieces, we would recommend using a stonemason with experience of working with rubble stone. They will ensure you achieve the best quality finish for your building or walling project.

For a quicker and simpler installation, our Ragstone rubble cladding slips are cut from stone from the same quarry, but are easier to use so can be applied by a competent general builder.

We’ve provided a few tips on how to build a stone wall, and if you need any advice, give us a call.

What is Rubble building stone?

Rubble building stone is an identical material to our random building stone, but is ‘undressed’. This means it has a more raw, naturalistic type of finish, whereas random building stone has a more regular, coursed appearance.

Rubble building stone is also less uniform than random stone in its sizes. The heights and widths are more irregular, with the bed width cropping to between 75mm and 200mm (3 -8 inch) as standard. (‘Bed width’ is the width of your footing). As with all our building stone, our rubble stone will have at least one usable face per piece.

Being less regular in shape and size, rubble building stone requires the skills of a trained stone mason or appropriately experienced builder. The stone finish and technique is suitable for house construction and commercial / public buildings, restoration and renovation projects, particularly in historic settings and where a more traditional effect is desired.

One bulk bag of rubble building stone supplied to the standard 75mm-200mm (3 -8 inch) bed width will provide enough material for between 2 to 4.5 square metres of facing stone depending on the product.

Please note that the bulk bags are not weighed, but are approximately 900kgs

What if I need my stone cut differently?

Stone can be provided “as dug”. This is stone dug straight from the quarry, without cropping to a specific bed width, and is popular when building dry stone walls.

We can also provide corner stones as required. These are made by cropping the random building stone as normal, then turning each piece of stone at right angles and cropping once more to make a right angled corner.

Building and walling materials to match

For a quicker and simpler installation, our Ragstone rubble cladding slips are cut from stone from the same quarry, but are easier to use so can be applied by a competent general builder.

We also source a range of flagstones, cobblestones, lintels and cills from responsible suppliers throughout the world, to provide our customers with a wider choice of colour, finish and prices.

Many of these can be closely matched to other stone products, or can be successfully combined with complementary ranges – for example, using lighter coloured stone for cills and coping stones. If you would like advice, examples or ideas about combining stone ranges, do give us a call – or even better, pop in to our showroom.

For natural landscaping we provide boulders and rockery stones from all of our own UK quarries. These are available in various sizes from small rockery stones to 12 tonne boulders.

Different uses for Rubble building stone

An important note about natural stone

Whilst we have done our utmost to ensure the stone and colours displayed on our website are accurate, they are to be used as a guide only. Because stone is a natural product, texture and colour will vary from piece to piece. As we work through the quarry, seams will yield slightly different coloured and shaped stones.

The building technique, quantity, colour and type of mortar used will all impact on the the look of the finished product. Please bear this in mind when ordering stone products. For larger projects or any projects where a specific look is required, we recommend that test panels are built.
