About Us

Black Mountain Quarries Ltd is a family-owned business based in the heart of the Black Mountains, on the Herefordshire / Monmouthshire border.

We provide a range of high quality natural stone products including cladding slips and facing stone for building and walling; flagstones for internal flooring and external paving; masonry products such as quoins, cills, lintels, and roofing tiles; and landscaping products such as coping and steps. We also offer bespoke stone for commercial projects including ashlar cladding, paving and boulders.

We run four quarries in Herefordshire, Monmouthshire and Cornwall from where we lift premium quality grey-green sandstone, red-brown sandstone and silver-grey granite.

Our natural stone products are suitable for commercial, public, residential and domestic projects. Our customers include architects, specifiers, builders, developers and private individuals throughout the UK, Europe and overseas.

Origins

Founded in 2005, Black Mountain Quarries came into being because of a serendipitous enquiry from a nearby church looking for good quality local stone. Historical records suggested a source of old Devonian sandstone below our family farm; what began as a mildly curious exploration turned into an exciting discovery.

The stone we quarry here in Tybubach – technically a red Devonian sandstone – is characterised by its green-grey colouring combined with russet brown tones. It became our first product and we named it BMQ Random Building stone. Having been used historically in the region it was initially very popular for local projects. The quality and colouring of the stone quickly led to national demand, and the business expanded from there.

Quarry network

By 2011 we had acquired three other working quarries. Llandraw Quarry, a mile along the valley, provides sandstone identical in colouring and quality to Tybubach, but with natural laminations enabling us to split flatter-bedded products. Callow Hill Quarry in Monmouthshire provides red-brown sandstone for building and walling. De Lank Quarry in Cornwall provides premium quality silver-grey granite for building, walling, landscaping and features.

In the last few years we have begun working with a select group of quarries to make available a wider range of colours and textures. This allows us to provide high quality products that respect the architectural heritage of your local area, wherever you are in the UK. We also work with a small number of quarries in Ireland and overseas, to offer unusual stone that can’t be sourced in the UK. Our product pages all state the origin of the stone.

Workforce and Skills

We apply the same high value to our workforce as we do to our products. All our staff live locally and are permanently employed. We are proud to have helped revive traditional methods of hand-dressing and finishing stone, and have supported our stone masons through training in these historic skills.

Materials and Environment

We only work with high quality natural materials because they enhance environments, weather beautifully, last indefinitely, and create no problematic waste in the future. All our products are 100% natural stone, and are just shaped, cropped or carved to suit their intended purpose. Most of our products are quarried in the UK, to support British industry and to keep transport emissions as low as possible.
