Granite rainscreen cladding for Cornwall Council offices

The silver-grey granite was cut to size and flame textured by our skilled stone masons at De Lank. It has been used for external rainscreen wall cladding as well as granite treads on four flights of stairs, two half-landings, and two granite paved lobbies on the first and second floors. In total we have supplied 1,214m2 of our world-class Cornish granite for the three storey building. Completion is scheduled for April 2015.

Project Partners

The project is led by BAM Construct, who were appointed by Cornwall Council to carry out the design and construction of the new building. The Architect was Poynton Bradbury Wynter Cole Architects.

Stone Cladding International were sub-contracted to design and install the natural stone cladding. The design of the rainscreen cladding & fixing system was carried out by SCI’s in-house design facilities, creating a highly sophisticated framework for the concealed fixing of the cladding. The granite was cut to size and flame textured at De Lank, and all edge detailing and fixing slots were created at SCI’s manufacturing facility in Newton Abbot, Devon.

De Lank Quarry has previously worked successfully with both BAM Construct and Stone Cladding International, producing 800m2 of 34mm cladding for the The Health & Wellbeing Innovation Centre at Treliske in Truro. This project was also commissioned by Cornwall Council.

Environmental Credentials

The Innovation Centre was designed and built to the BREEAM Excellence standard, one of the highest levels of environmental accreditation available for new buildings. The standard calls for a low environmental impact both during construction and throughout its lifespan.

The new office building at Beacon Technology Park is aiming for a DEC rating of 5. BAM Construct has the highest listing for annual carbon reduction of all companies in the UK.

Using locally sourced, responsibly quarried natural granite stone from De Lank has fulfilled the environmental criteria for building materials, for both of these Cornish projects.

De Lank Cornish Granite

Silver-grey granite has been quarried at De Lank near Bodmin in Cornwall since the mid-19th century. It has been used in some of Britain’s finest buildings and landmarks. Since the turn of the new millenium our Cornish granite has been used in Paternoster Square by St. Paul’s Cathedral, for furniture and paving in Trafalgar Square, and for the Lady Diana memorial in Hyde Park.

More recently, De Lank silver-grey granite has been used for commercial paving in a Duchy of Cornwall new town near Newquay, and for public artworks at a hospital in Liverpool.

Considerable investment in equipment and technology at De Lank in recent years has reduced waste, increased production and enabled us to make our world-famous silver-grey granite more widely affordable. We have a range of granite products ideal for domestic and commercial use. We can also create bespoke Cornish granite products to your specification.
